What Is A Turnbuckle?

Turnbuckles, also known as wire rope tensioner, rigging screw, are widely used for binding and tightening wire ropes. Their main function is to adjust the tightness of the wire rope, tighten the slack and apply tension to the rigging components to ensure ease and safety of use.

They are designed for straight-pull, in-line applications. They come in a variety of types, sizes, materials and surfaces, suitable for a variety of hanging, tie-down and tensioning applications.

Depending on the application, there are a variety of types of turnbuckles to choose from, such as the eye type for occasions that are not often disassembled, the hook type for occasions that are often disassembled, and the hook-loop type to meet the specific needs of frequent disassembly of one end and infrequent disassembly of the other end.

Depending on the process, turnbuckles are divided into two types: casting and forging. Casting turnbuckles are suitable for static binding and stabilization scenarios, such as garden windbreaks and agricultural greenhouses; while forged turnbuckles are more suitable for lifting, freight binding and reinforcement, such as cargo binding in logistics, sling connections, and steel structure cable rod connectors.

Depending on the surface treatment, turnbuckles are usually electroplated or hot-dip plated to enhance their corrosion resistance and extend their service life. Electroplating has a smoother surface and is relatively inexpensive. Hot-dip turnbuckles have a thicker coating, are suitable for harsh environments, have stronger corrosion resistance, and have a longer service life.

What are Turnbuckles Made Of?

Tensioners are generally made of carbon steel or stainless steel. Common carbon steels include low-carbon steel Q235, high-carbon steel No. 45 steel, etc., and stainless steels include 304\316. Whether it is a carbon steel turnbuckle or a stainless steel turnbuckle, both have heavy-duty performance and reliability. The difference between the two materials mainly lies in the degree of corrosion resistance. Stainless steel is more corrosion-resistant than hot-dip galvanized steel, making it an ideal choice for marine applications.

What are the parts of a turnbuckle?

It consists of left-hand and right-hand threaded adjustment rods, nuts and pull rods. The adjustment rod is also fixed with an anti-theft and anti-loosening device composed of a cover plate, a fixing plate, and a guide plate connected together with anti-theft and anti-loosening bolts. When in use, a special matching sleeve must be used to unscrew the anti-theft and anti-loosening bolts, which have good anti-theft effects, are safe and reliable. After the anti-theft and anti-loosening device is disassembled, it does not need to be taken down. Use the ring guide on it to slide along the pull rod, and move a distance to adjust and operate.

What Are The Size Of A Turnbuckle?

In terms of specifications and sizes, there are metric and imperial sizes. The diameter of the turnbuckle ranges from 6mm to 32mm. Common specifications include 6mm, 8mm, 10mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 20mm, 22mm, 25mm, 28mm and 32mm. Turnbuckles of different specifications and types are suitable for different scenarios, such as ships, coal mines, power and other fields, to ensure stable operation in various environments.

How to use the turnbuckle ?

The turnbuckle design is easy to use. To install, just unscrew the end fittings, connect one to the anchor point and the other to the cable line, and then tighten the turnbuckle as needed to screw the end fittings back into place.

  1. Select the location

After selecting the location, place the flower basket in a suitable position and confirm the location of the flower basket’s fixing holes.

  1. Unscrew the fittings at both ends

Unscrew the fittings at both ends and extend the threaded rod.

  1. Connect to the anchor point

Connect one end of the connector to the anchor point and make sure the anchor point is securely fixed to avoid pulling, breaking or breaking due to tension pressure.

  1. Connect to the cable line

Extend the other end to the cable line of your choice and secure it. The turnbuckle can be used with a shackle, wire rope ferrule, stainless steel nut, etc.

  1. Tighten the turnbuckle

After fixing the two ends of the turnbuckle, use a tool such as a wrench or torque wrench to gradually tighten the bolts to ensure that the bolts are firmly fixed to the turnbuckle.

Choosing the Right End Fitting

While there are a variety of end fittings to choose from, we will cover three common fittings. These types are named after their end fittings, eye-eye turnbuckles have two eye-end fittings, while jaw turnbuckles have one jaw-end fitting and one eye-end fitting.

  • Eye-Eye Turnbuckle

Eye-Eye fittings Turnbuckle are solid rings that provide a permanent connection with no weak points. They are often used in applications where they are not often removed.

  • Jaw-Jaw Turnbuckle

Jaw-end fittings come with a nut and bolt or a pin and cotter pin assembly, making them ideal for applications where you cannot use eye-end fittings but still need a secure, long-term connection.

  • Hook-Eye Turnbuckle

For short-term rigging situations, consider using a hook-end fitting that meets the specific need of frequent removal of one end and infrequent removal of the other.
